The 12 Hr sponsored swim was carried out to raise funds for a small group of the Stanley Swimming Club Elite Squad to attend this years NatWest Small Island Games. This year the games are being held in Gibraltar. Each sporting club that has members attending have been doing their bit to help raise funds for their members to participate. The Falkland Islands Islands fishing industry are heavily supportive of the Falkland Islands Teams attendance, with RBC, CFL and Fortuna all giving sponsorship and Argos Ltd funding all youth competitors and sponsoring the team kit.
Pioneer Seafoods Ltd were extremely happy to be one of three businesses to sponsor the Stanley Swimming Clubs swim this year. All money raised will go towards additional expenses involved in the clubs attendance and money left over will go towards items to benefit all the children who attend the club of which we have 40 members, ages ranging from 8 to 19yrs.
The swim took place on the 16th and 17th of March starting at 8pm. With the fantastic support of guest swimmers and club members alike we managed to swim a distance of 140.23 miles which equates to 8,968 lengths of a 25metre pool. Swimmers swam through the night, all achieving truly outstanding individual goals, one member managing 12 miles with the 6 Elite Squad members covering a 3rd of the total distance!
The Stanley Swimming Club would like to thank Pioneer Seafoods Ltd for their support of this event and also the generosity of the Industry in supporting and enabling the Falkland Islands to attend such major sporting events.
