The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association (FIFCA) has a new home in the historic heart of Stanley.
The organisation, which represents all Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) holders under the Falkland Islands’ fisheries management system, was previously housed in Atlantic House. In April, its base moved from there to the newly refurbished number 39 Jubilee Villa which was formerly the home of John and Joyce Allan. The villas, a row of brick terrace houses, were built by the Dean family in 1887 and named to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
At a reception held to mark the move into the Jubilee Villas, FIFCA Executive Secretary James Bates said that, given the building’s historic importance, care was taken to ensure the refurbishment was made sensitively and original features were preserved while creating a modern focal point for the key industry of fishing. He commented, “In achieving this balance, not only have we created a space we can all be proud of and showcase our industry, we have also sought to preserve this iconic building for the generations that will hopefully follow.”
