Indonesian Disaster Relief Fund
Over recent weeks, an account has been set up to raise funds for the Indonesian Disaster Relief efforts caused by the recent tsunami there. Although largely unseen, people from Indonesia contribute significantly to the Falklands economy working in the commercial fishing industry on the behalf of us all.
The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association,(FIFCA) Executive Secretary, James Bates set up a local charity account at Standard Chartered Bank in order that everyone could have the opportunity to show their support and he was delighted by the response from the community.
Just under £18500.00 was raised and these funds will be shortly transferred to the Disaster Relief Committee UK in order that they can make effective use of the donation from the Falkland Islands.
Adam Brown from DEC UK said, “That's absolutely wonderful, what a fantastic total, a really amazing effort” and thanked everyone who contributed; a sentiment reiterated by James himself who would like to thank members of FIFCA, the Tabernacle and Lighthouse Seafarers Mission who both held events to raise funds, FIG, the Stanley Women’s Association and of course members of the wider Falklands Community for their generosity and support”.
