Falklands marks World Ocean Day 2025

FIFCA joins Word Ocean Day celebration

The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association (FIFCA) was represented at a fun-packed World Ocean Day event held at Stanley’s Parish Hall on Sunday. The event, organised by the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI), was an afternoon of activities, learning and ocean discovery.

FIFCA, alongside a variety of organisations such the Shallow Marine Survey Group, Falklands Conservation and Consolidated Fisheries Limited, contributed to an engaging afternoon filled with ocean-themed activities, informative discussions, and interactive exhibits.

Members of the public enjoyed hands-on experiences, including educational displays about marine biodiversity and important work being done to protect the ocean’s inhabitants. The FIFCA stand provided insights into not only the significant investments fishing companies have made in state of the art vessels but also their commitment to marine conservation, with information provided by the industry helping to fill gaps in knowledge with regard to biodiversity and species protection.

There was plenty of fun on offer, and particularly popular with the younger visitors to the stand was a competition to find ‘Lionel the Loligo Squid’ who was hiding within the Falklands Conservation Zones.

World Ocean Day, celebrated annually on June 8, serves as a global reminder of the need to protect and preserve our oceans. The participation of FIFCA in this local celebration underscores the Falkland Islands' dedication to responsible fishing and marine stewardship.
