The CFL Charitable Trust is again accepting applications for educational and training awards for 2023.
The principal aim of the Trust is to further the education and training of the people of the Falkland Islands, and to provide emergency relief to people who are suffering as a result of disaster anywhere in the world, but especially in countries associated in some way with the Falklands.
The Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees who consider all applications objectively although it should be noted that preference is given to those who hold Falkland Islands status and have attempted to obtain funding from available public sources such as the Community Development Scheme (CDS).
CFL is the sole licence holder for Toothfish in Falklands waters, and has always worked consistently to not only improve the sustainability of its own operations, but also to contribute to the improvement of fishing practices in the industry.
The most recent award was made to Irina Chemshirova who will be heading off to Tokyo in May for a week-long International Sclerochonology Conference.
The Trust has made up the shortfall in funding for Irina who has just completed her PhD project studying illex argentinus to attend the conference.
The aim of Irina’s work is to use various methods to distinguish between the different Illex groups. existence of these groups is believed to be behind the ability of the species to bounce-back even when catches are low as in 2009. Irina explained that in investigating the groups closely the success of future fishing seasons can be better understood and predicted.
Irina said she was extremely grateful to both FIG and the CFL Trust for making her attendance at the International Sclerochronological Conference in Tokyo possible.
“As with many other students due to pandemic travel restrictions, which have lasted almost the entirety of my studies, I have only been able to present my work via virtual attendance to conferences which was beneficial, but not comparable to the opportunity to exchange ideas and communicate with other people in my field in real time,” she said.
If you wish to make an application to the Trust for funding which will be considered by the Board in April/May email the Trust secretary Sharon.adminpr@cfl.co.fk for more information and an application form.
